If you’ve ever travelled while trying to stick to a healthy diet you’ll know just how hard it can be. Suddenly, you’re starving, on the train, or at the airport and surrounded by crisps, pre-packed sandwiches and choccy bars! All too quickly that pack of Jelly Babies looks oh so enticing, plus you’re not in your normal environment so you kind of think, what the hell! But it’s a slippery slope and with a little planning you can stay on track, or at least make better choices when you’re on the go.
If you’re traveling by airplane, your diet may have to include airplane food, which can often be of poor nutritional value, depending on the selection. When you book your flight, ask about your food options, ask if a vegetarian dish is available? Vegetarian dishes are sometimes more nutritional in this case, but it really depends on what they may be serving.
If you’re going short haul, eat a big healthy meal you’ve made yourself before you go. If you’re going long haul then it’s trickier. If you’re lucky you may be able to get a healthy meal in the airport, for example sushi and sashimi, or a stir fry. If it’s morning time, swerve the croissants and opt for porridge. If that’s not going to keep you going for your entire flight, think about what you can buy after security and take on board with you – healthy salad boxes for example. But do think about the length of the flight and when you want to eat it – that sushi box is not going to look, or smell, so good after 9 hours at 35,000 ft….
When driving you may be tempted to stop at fast food restaurants and eat the meals found there. Avoid this whenever possible! These days we’re fortunate that even most fast food outlets have salads and/or healthier options, but by far the better option is to take your own meal with you.
A small cool box with some salad you’ve prepped, some lean meats, or low-fat cheese in a cooler is a great way to avoid high-fat and high-cholesterol junk food meals. These are much better choices and you’ll save a lot of money as well. Call ahead to ask if there will be a fridge in your hotel room.
The same goes for the train. Plan ahead and bring your own meal or buy something healthy at the station from a supermarket.
Lastly, make smart choices when you eat out. If you choose salads get the dressing on the side and ask about low-carb options. In fact, many places print these dieting options directly in the menu for the health-conscious people. Control your portions by ordering lunch menu sizes or splitting the meal in halve and getting a doggie bag. Then you’ll be well on your way to healthy eating, even away from home.
Yes, eating healthy foods when you travel can be a challenge. However, it’s worth it. Eating meals high in nutrition will also assist in fighting illnesses that you are likely to encounter when traveling and you will find yourself more alert so that you can enjoy your trip.
