When you’re over 45 discipline trumps motivation and will get you the results you’re looking for.
When you take care of yourself, you take care of all aspects of your life, the good results in one area are reflected in another.
Think about it; what happens when you don’t have self-discipline?
Binge watch Netflix all weekend
Wasting hours on social media
Wasting the weekends doing nothing or drowning your sorrows
You miss the morning workout again and again
Make poor food choices
Feel terrible as a result
You work too many hours
Fatigue creeps up on you
Leading to feelings you’re not doing enough, stress and and anxiety
In the evening you flop in front of the telly
You’re drained
Your relationships suffer
Rinse and repeat…
When you have discipline you have purpose and you actually accomplish more of the goals you actually care about AND feel better about yourself, which means you show up as a better version of you.
So how do you build discipline?
Here are 3 ideas to move the needle:
1) Be clear on your vision
Have a vision for how you want to live your life. Knowing who you are will make it easier to say no to things not in line with your values.
This helps with decision making.
You’re not going to get it right all the time – learn to be compassionate with yourself, getting it right most of the time is good enough.
2) Have a physical goal
Like it or not our health and our body are linked to our mental and emotional wellbeing. If you’re not physically taking care of you that lack of care is going to show up in other areas of your life.
A physical goal acts as an anchor to help rewire habits and rituals and keep us on track, helping us make better choices (see above).
You don’t have to be going for a big challenge here (but you can!) but it could be to hit a PB, lose a certain amount of inches from your waist, feel confident naked…
3) Pay for accountability
When you’ve got skin in the game, the game matters.
