A quick word on distraction (and I’m as guilty as this as anyone from time to time, but I’m taking action to change it).
Distraction can be good, it’s one of the tools we use with our clients to shift unhelpful habits for example.
However, all too often it can have a negative effect, thanks to it’s close cousins procrastination and comparison. You ever had trouble getting started with something, or perhaps you’ve started but aren’t really in flow? So you decide to do something else, just for a little while?
Or perhaps you’ve just lost focus, so you start casting around for “inspiration”.Then you’ll know how it generally goes… hours later you’re no closer to your goal but you know all about cats that can play the piano (harmless but a waste of time), or worse, you’re starting to feel like you’re an imposter, that everyone else is doing so much better than you…Then not only have you not got started, now you’re extra demotivated.
Listen, go easy in yourself, in our modern world it’s hard. Everyone is shouting about how great they’re (supposedly) doing. It’s easy to start to feel you’re not punching anywhere near your weight.
Two things:
One, people are lying (saw someone who had thousands of views on every insta video they posted – thought “Wow!”, then realised that each video with thousands of views had no likes and literally two or three comment – do the maths…).
So if you can, don’t look, if you must look, take it with a pinch of salt. Two, energy flows where attention goes. If you’re attention is not on you and your goals, then watch out.
It’s so easy to get distracted by the noise out there. It’s so easy to feel you deserve a break (and you do) but to let that rest drift into a malaise.
If you find this happening, then do this:Reconnect with your goal. Remind yourself why you want this thing so badly. Then take an action (however small) towards it.
Focus on your journey, your path, and keep stepping along it. That’s the way you’ll make it. The grass is greener where you water it.
Remember, momentum breeds momentum. So step up, take action towards your goal on a constant basis and success will be yours.
Have a wonderful day.
