We’ve all heard that moderate wine consumption can actually have some health benefits, but is it actually true?
Well, yes. And no…
Determined to find the definitive answer researchers at Anglia Ruskin University looked at 450,000 drinkers aged 40 to 69 over 7 years.
First the good news (if you like wine!) – there was a 40% reduction in coronary heart disease amongst those who drank up to 11 glasses of wine a week.
However… before you all order that case of merlot…
The same reduction was also found in those drinking non-alcoholic wine.
The cardiovascular benefits are all down to polyphenols, anti-oxidants found in grapes, that can boost heart health.
So, if you’re after an anti-oxidant boost, non-alcoholic is the way to go – it’s also lower in sugar and calories, so there’s an added benefit (plus no hangovers!) on body composition.
If you’re wondering about other drinks, moderate amounts of beer, cider or spirits were linked to around a 10% increased risk to your heart health.
