When a new piece of research about midlife health comes out, of course – we are all over it.
But the one in the Telegraph yesterday really struck a chord.
It seems us Gen-X-ers have got ourselves in quite the pickle.
It’s also why we feel so deeply passionate about what we do as The Midlife Mentors.
The study looked at 8000 people born in 1970 and found that ONE IN THREE people born that year are living with multi morbidities.
…meaning two or more chronic heath conditions such as cardio vascular disease or diabetes.
They thought they’d find one in five at the most…
It seems – mentally and physically us Gen X-ers are more unhealthy than both our parents AND grandparents.
It’s also widely agreed that we’re the first generation in history where life expectancy has decreased.
So what seems to have driven this?
A few things…
– The rather hedonistic culture of the 80s and 90s – working hard but playing harder
– The over consumption of alcohol
– The obsessive fad diet industry that created an unhealthy relationship with food
– The all or nothing approach to life….(detox to retox!)
– And most of all it seems – we’re the first generation to be exposed to ultra processed and high sugar food
And you know what?
Claire Davis and I are witnessing first hand via the work we do with individuals and corporates that the problem IS REAL.
It’s not scare mongering.
Increasingly – we know how important our work is.
That’s not from an ego place AT ALL. In fact – we are always humbled when people place their trust in us.
But it’s important because – well ONE IN THREE!
Clearly there’s many Gen-X-ers out there struggling mentally and physically – who need help NOW.
And it’s not looking good.
But it’s not impossible to change our fate.
We’ve had the privilege of helping many mid lifers who believed they were a lost cause.
– They couldn’t feel comfortable in their own skin.
– They couldn’t feel full of power and potential.
– They couldn’t feel joy or passion again.
But they did.
Little by little they regained control and rewired their brain for long term health and happiness.
It’s heartbreaking to think there are people out there who’ve given up.
In fact it’s why we record and air a weekly podcast episode of The Midlife Mentors for free – so at least there’s access to practical strategies – for body, mind and soul.
All I want to say is if you are a fellow Gen-X-er and the above is all too familiar – please do reach out to us.
You can find out about our approach and programmes at
There’s also an option to book a call with us.
The second act of your beautiful life is what you make it.
Might it be hard?
Of course….but the time will pass anyway. So baby steps is better than nothing.
