Who Loves A Burpee?

Most of us have a love/hate relationships with burpees – we love to hate them!

Although they’re a tough move, they also get great results, and trust me, you can learn to love them…

We’ve had clients start of hating them, but a while into working with us grudgingly admit that, yep, they now kind of like them.

Apart from being sadists, why would we ask our clients to burpee?

Well, welllandgood.com have a great article on burpees where they sought the advice of a cardiologist Sajit Bhusri, MD.

He reckons that the tough full body nature of the move is super heart healthy.

“The heart and lungs are forced to work more efficiently to supply energy to the body.”

“Studies have shown that a higher number of burpees in [a three-minute interval] indicates higher cardiorespiratory fitness, which is associated with reduced risk for heart disease. And, more specifically, those with higher cardiorespiratory fitness had a lower risk of coronary artery disease.”

Not only that but burpees produce a high calorie burn as our bodies struggle to get sufficient oxygen (the EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) afterburner effect) that spikes our metabolism for hours afterwards as our bodies attempt to “catch up”.

“Other benefits include improvement of blood flow and lowering of blood pressure.”

Now, we know a lot of people fear the burpee – but we all have our own starting point and current level of mobility and fitness. We coach our clients with various different modifications, even the most basic variation, if it’s challenging for your current level, is going to get results.

As our fitness improves, we can progress and up the intensity – but remember – a low variation is still intense for someone with a low level of fitness, and so still gets results.
